Among features provided by Samba 4 there are several which look appealing to developers of embedded devices:

• smaller footprint,
• integrated platform for administrative interfaces,
• JavaScript-based Samba automation.

While smaller footprint always helps in embedded solutions, other features make Samba 4 use attractive and increasingly important. For the first time, third-party developers get unified platform which is integrated tightly into Samba and allows to get access to all internal details about CIFS operation they always wanted to see.

JavaScript-based Samba environment allows to automate many tasks which previously required almost mandatory modification of Samba source code. Those tasks now can be done at higher level and with (to some degree) lower developer’s qualification.

The talk covers these new aspects of using Samba 4 as basis of embedded solution including server and client-side usage. Sample implementations of Samba4-based appliances will be discussed along with issues and solutions of cross-compilation of Samba 4.
